Can You Install a Metal Roof Over 2 Layers of Shingles?
The TLDR answer? Yes, you can install a metal roof over 2 layers of shingles.
The main reasons to go down this route are cost savings and avoiding the hassle of stripping away old roofing materials. But there are challenges, too. For instance, you’ll need to assess the structural integrity of your roof, condition of the shingles, and local building codes to make sure everything is compliant.
Key Considerations When Installing a Metal Roof Over 2 Layers of Shingles
Structural Integrity
Be absolutely sure that the roof can support the extra weight of the metal roofing. Too much weight can put a strain on the frame, especially in older homes or buildings.
Building Codes and Local Regulations
Local building codes may limit the number of roofing layers allowed. Always check with your local authority to make sure you’re following the rules, as some regions allow only one layer of shingles under a new roof.
Condition of the Existing Shingles
Check the current shingles for damage. If they are cracked, warped, or falling apart, it may be better to remove them entirely before installing the metal roof.
Ventilation and Moisture Control
Installing a metal roof over shingles can trap heat and moisture beneath the metal, leading to mold, rot, and premature deterioration. It’s important to ensure there’s proper ventilation through the roof and to use breathable underlayment to prevent these issues.
Underlayment Installation
A high-quality underlayment is a must when installing metal roofing over shingles to provide extra protection and prevent water from seeping in.
Installing a Metal Roof Over Shingles: Pros & Cons
Pros:
Benefits | Explanation |
Cost Savings | Removes the need for a full roof tear-off, cutting down on labor and disposal costs. |
Faster Installation | Can be installed more quickly than traditional methods, especially when there’s no need to remove old shingles. |
Energy Efficiency | Highly reflective, reducing heat absorption and lowering energy costs. |
Increased Durability | Highly resistant to extreme weather like hail, snow, and high winds. |
Cons:
Drawbacks | Explanation |
Structural Concerns | Adding more layers makes the roof heavier, which may not be a good fit for all structures. |
Moisture & Ventilation Issues | Without proper ventilation, moisture can build up between layers, leading to mold, rot, or roof failure. |
Complicated Repairs | If the existing shingles or roof deck are damaged, repairs can be more complex and expensive down the line. |
How to Ensure a Successful Installation
- Hire a Professional: It’s important to get a licensed and experienced roofing pro on board. They’ll be able to assess the structure and existing shingles for any issues, and ensure the installation complies with building codes and industry best practices..
- Check the Roof Thoroughly: If there are weak spots, it may be necessary to replace them before installing the metal roof.
- Choose the Right Materials: Corrugated steel and standing seam metal roofs are popular options, but make sure the material you choose is suitable for your climate and the condition of the underlying shingles.
- Ensure Proper Underlayment: Go for a high-quality, breathable underlayment to help keep moisture down and your space ventilated.
A Cost-Effective Solution with Caution
Installing a metal roof over 2 layers of shingles is a great way for homeowners to save on time and labor costs. But it’s important to make sure your roof is structurally sound and you follow local building regulations. With proper planning, professional installation, and the right materials, you can get a long-lasting, durable roof that protects your home for years to come.

“I’ve used Apex twice now and both times have been a great experience!! I had them lay a metal roof over my shingles.
First off, I live two hours away from Apex up near Winter Park over the pass. I was very excited they were willing to work with me being so far away. Secondly my roof is tall, and wicked steep. We often experience severe winds up here, & boy those winds don’t let up quick once they start gusting. Sometimes the Apex crew would only be able to work a short day due to often unpredictable weather rolling in over the mts. They were so kind and understanding about it, even though it’s such a drive for them! They would come back right away (as soon as it was safe to be up on it again)! There are a lot of shady contractors up here that would probably stretch this project out, but not Apex. They have an amazing follow-through and are very efficient!
The second time using them, I was finishing my last section of roof and I emailed them way too close to our early winter start up here.
To my surprise, they were able to squeeze me in and get my roof done within like only two weeks time of my email! Bless their hearts they even came up on a 10 degree morning after snow! I was thrilled, especially knowing their efforts are spread out helping hurricane Ian homes too!
My mocha colored metal roof looks wonderful and I’d recommend Apex to anyone. The communication is tip top and work is professional.
Big thank you to Darren and his crew for getting my roof ready for those harsh winter storms and providing excellent service throughout the weather and driving up here a bunch!!! Thank you Julia for being so responsive throughout this entire process!
Cheers Apex! 🙂” – Stephanie C.
