How To Tell If Your Roof Has Hail Damage

Here are a few steps you can take to look for hail damage.

Check metal for dents and dings – Hail may damage roof flashing and other metal components. This could compromise them, and also indicate major damage to your shingles. The size of the dents can also help you understand the overall size of the hail.
Examine the ridge cap and shingles – Ridge caps are flat, so hail strikes them without bouncing as much, causing more damage. Use a ladder and the appropriate safety precautions and equipment to get on your roof. Then, closely examine your ridge cap and its shingles to look for dents and signs of damage.
Identify the type of damage – Portions of black roofing may indicate damage to the asphalt granules on your shingles. Small “dips” on shingles may indicate bruising that is causing the shingle to break down. Split wood shingles or circular cracks on asphalt shingles indicate severe damage from hail. Any compromised shingles should be replaced right away to protect the integrity of your roof.
